When Should One Consider Undergoing a Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik eye surgery is a refractive surgery which is also called laser eye surgery or laser vision correction. This type of surgery is performed for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Most patients use Lasik surgery as a permanent alternative to the contact lens. It is the type of surgery which works by reshaping the cornea. The surgery is believed to have a success rate of 96 per cent.

It causes very little pain to the patient and the vision is corrected immediately. The surgery provides patients with a dramatic reduction in their dependence on contact lenses and in some cases the patient does not require contact lenses at all.

One of the biggest advantages of Lasik eye surgery is that it requires no stitches or bandages thus requiring a smaller recovery period. Reasons to undergo this surgery:

1. Hyperopia:

It is also known as farsightedness and occurs the patient can see distant objects clearly but has difficulty seeing near objects just as sharply. Hyperopia occurs when the eye focuses images behind the retina instead of on it which results in a blurry vision.

This happens when the patient’s eyeballs are short and prevent the incoming light from focusing directly on the retina. As with myopia, the symptoms of hyperopia are headaches, squinting, eyestrain and blurry vision when it comes to close objects.

Eyeglasses and contact lenses are temporary methods of treatment. However, if a patient wishes to permanently correct the problem, they must opt for a Lasik eye surgery.

2. Myopia:

Patients who suffer from myopia have difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects. Near-sightedness is a common refractive error of the eye that several patients suffer from. Doctors believe that myopia is caused due to eye fatigue from extensive computer use.

Common symptoms of one suffering from myopia are squinting, eye strain and headaches. It can cause a feeling of fatigue if not corrected. Temporary solutions are eyeglasses and contact lenses.

But Lasik eye surgery is the ideal treatment option to permanently fix the problem. Myopia is believed to begin during childhood and is more likely to occur to those whose parents also suffer from near-sightedness.

3. Astigmatism:

It is an optical defect which a patient suffers from due to the eye’s inability to focus on an object to create a sharp and focused image on the retina. This is possibly caused due to a toric or irregular curvature of the cornea or lens.

If you suffer from any of these three conditions and wish to opt for a permanent form of treatment, Lasik eye surgery is your answer. The surgery is painless and has a high success rate among patients.
