What types of Knee Replacement Surgery are there?

Since knee pains can be caused by different factors, hence type of surgery depends on the cause of the Knee Pain.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction – ACL is one of the four major knee ligaments and is crucial for knee stability. People with this injury will often find themselves unable to move with ease and the injured knee may even result in swelling. This injury is mostly afflicted during sports activities such as basketball and football. ACL can be treated through both physiotherapy and surgery.

Meniscus Repair/Transplant – The meniscus is an important rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber in the knees. It sits between the shinbone and the thighbone and can tear due to a forceful twisting of the knees. This type of injury is also common during sports activities. People also face the risk of having arthritis through this injury. If the damage to the meniscus is minimal, then it can be repaired by suturing the torn edges and allowing it to heal naturally without the involvement of the knee. However, if the damage is severe then the meniscus may be removed and another transplanted in its place from a suitable donor.

Microfracture – Microfracture is a type of surgical procedure which is popular among patients who are athletes. Small holes are created in the bone which will help in circulating and stimulating cartilage growth. However, this type of surgery only works for small areas of damage and the new cartilage will not be the same as the old cartilage.

Patellar/Quadriceps Tendon Repair – The quadriceps and the patellar tendons are situated on the front of the knee joint. Injury to this area results in the person being unable to straighten their knee without experiencing pain. This area may be injured if it suffers a direct impact from a fall or in accidents. Tendon repair is usually done through an open procedure where the torn tendons are sutured back to its place on the patella (kneecap).

Lateral Release – The kneecap moves up and down in a groove of cartilage. However, the kneecap can move out of its place if the lateral retinaculum is too tight. Lateral Release is a surgical procedure to loosen the ligaments that will prevent it from pulling the kneecap outside its groove.

Pilca Excision – The pilca is a remnant of tissue from fetal development. Though it gets lost over time, it may remain in some cases. When the pilca8 gets irritated, it is called a plica syndrome. Pilca excision is a surgery where8 this remnant tissue is removed from the knee.

Partial Knee Replacement – A partial knee replacement is recommended for people who suffer from certain types of knee arthritis. If only a part of the knee is arthritic then doctors will recommend this surgery. The damaged portion will be replaced by using implant pieces.

Total Knee Replacement – When people suffer from severe arthritis, a full knee replacement may be recommended. This surgery is exactly what it says. The bone and cartilage from the end of the thighbone and the top of the shinbone are removed so that it can successfully support the implant. The implant can either be of plastic or of metal and will act as a new knee joint.

It is always best to consult a doctor if you have hurt your knee in any way. Though home care may be your first choice, it is not a bad idea to go to a doctor as he will be able to pinpoint the exact nature of the injury and will recommend you the best treatment and care.
