Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is a procedure designed to remove excess skin and excess fat and tighten muscles from middle and lower abdomen. The surgical procedure also tightens the underlying abdominal muscles to result in a tighter, more toned appearing abdomen. Good candidates for abdominoplasty are individuals in good health who have tried to address these issues with diet and exercise with little or no results. An abdominoplasty is a component of a lower body lift and can be combined with liposuction contouring

Procedure

There are several different types of abdominoplasty procedures. The type that is best for you depends on whether you need to have muscles tightened, skin tightened, fat removed, or a combination of any of those factors.

Complete Abdominoplasty

In a complete (or full) abdominoplasty, an incision is made above the pubic area and toward the hip on either side. Through this incision the skin is lifted off the muscles, extending to the upper abdomen. The belly button is cut free from the surrounding skin and remains in its place. The abdominal muscles are tightened, if necessary. Then the skin is pulled down, and the excess skin is removed. Closure is performed with sutures, not staples, most of which are absorbable.

Partial Abdominoplasty

In a partial (or mini) abdominoplasty a smaller incision is made. The skin and fat of the lower abdomen are detached in a more limited fashion from the muscle fascia. The skin is stretched down and excess skin removed. Sometimes the belly button stalk is divided from the muscle below and the belly button slid down lower on the abdominal wall.
