What are the most common disorders treated by Spine Specialist in Mumbai?

The spine or your backbone is made of tiny bones known as the vertebrae that are piled up on top of one another with discs in between them. If the spine is healthy, when seen from behind must be straight. If there are any abnormalities, it will appear curved.

Achondroplasia

This condition is a bone growth defect, which causes disproportionate dwarfism. It is a condition where even as an adult, the individual experiences a short stature. People with this condition have a normal torso, but short legs, and this is the most common type of dwarfism. It can occur in both men and women.

When the fetus is still at the early development stage, most of the skeleton is made up of cartilage. This cartilage should convert into the bone for a normal growth. However, if there are mutations in the FGFR3 gene, all of it doesn’t get converted into bone and can cause achondroplasia.

Discitis

During this condition, inflammation occurs between the intervertebral disc of your spine. These discs are found in between your vertebrae. And, the spaces present between them is known as intervertebral disc spaces. When the swelling takes place in this location, it can put a strain on the discs, which can cause pain. It is a rare condition and mostly affects young children. It usually occurs with another condition known as osteomyelitis. The symptoms of this disorder include; changes in your posture, back stiffness, unable to perform regular movement easily, pain in the abdomen, discomfort, and fever.

Osteomyelitis

Although a rare condition, osteomyelitis is a serious bone infection. Generally, bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus caused this disorder. It is a kind of staph bacteria. However, a few chronic conditions, like diabetes, can also put you at a risk of developing this condition. This disorder can affect both adults and young children in different manners. A few conditions lead to the weakening of the immune system and can raise the risk of contracting this condition. They are; diabetes, sickle cell disease, HIV or AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, Intravenous drugs, consuming too much alcohol, using steroids for too long, hemodialysis, poor supply of blood, and injuries.

The symptoms of this condition include; fever, exhaustion, irritation, nausea, soreness, redness, and a warm feeling in the infected area, swelling, and loss of mobility. It can also cause severe back pain at night.

Lower back pain

Almost everyone experiences lower back pain. It starts just below the ribcage, a region known as the lumbar region. The good news is that this pain can rectify on its own. However, there are treatments to help you if it doesn’t get better. The pain in the lower back can be a dull ache or throbbing pain, which can make it hard for an individual to stand or stretch. If the pain lasts for more than 3 months, it is considered chronic.

You need immediate medical attention if the back pain is caused by a fall or an injury. Other warning signs are; loss of bladder or bowel control, feeling numb in the groin area, weakness in the legs, feeling pain when you a cough, fever, and urinating when you a cough.

Herniated disc

In between your vertebrae are cushion-like discs, which act as shock absorbers. When there is a problem with either one or more discs, it is known as a herniated disc. This condition can cause pain, numbness and/or weakness in your arm or leg. The cause of this condition is usually aging. As you age, the overuse causes your spinal disc to lose some water. And, this makes them less flexible and prone to damage. Being overweight, physically demanding jobs, and genes can increase the risk factors. The symptoms of this disorder include;

  • Pain in your arms and legs, with more severe pain in the buttocks, thigh, and calf muscles. When you a cough, you may feel the pain travel to your arms.
  • Numbness
  • The weakness that leads to difficulty in holding or lifting things
