Book Appointment

Obstetrics and Gynecology is a field of medical science which deals with the care and nurturing of women. They also deal with the diseases of pregnant women. Obstetrics is especially for treating pregnant women and their delivery, whereas a Gynecologist aims in treating diseases of women. There are many doctors who can provide both facilities. Obstetrics and gynecology together are referred to as OB/GYN.

They both aim in providing proper care to the mother and baby and have a healthy delivery. There are many diseases that can affect both mother and child in the absence of proper care. Therefore, proper care is very necessary. The pregnant woman must visit her obstetrician for regular checkups of the mother and baby. The baby can inherit many congenital diseases; therefore, diagnosis of such at an early stage is necessary.

The common diseases of women treated are as follows-

Who Qualifies for Obstetrics and Gynaecology procedures.

1. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - PCOS is a very common disease affecting girls in their reproductive ages. This may be due to hormonal imbalance which causes formation of cysts inside the uterus. Thus, many complications can occur with a woman with PCOS.

The basic symptoms of PCOS are as follows-

  • Irregular periods
  • Prolonged or late periods
  • Short and light spots
  • Obesity (overweight)
  • Acne
  • Depression
  • If not treated, then may cause infertility

How to treat PCOS?

PCOS is not completely curable. But with proper management of it, the woman can achieve a normal lifestyle. The best way to get a healthy lifestyle with PCOS is to take a healthy diet and regular exercise. Try to lose weight as being overweight can worsen the situation. Oral medications such as birth pills are also given to get regular menstruation (periods).

2. Endometriosis- It is the female reproductive disorder of the endometrium (the inner tissue layer of the womb, that is shed every month as menstruation) layer. This layer is present inside of the uterus, however in endometriosis it starts developing outside of it. This mostly occurs in the region of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining your pelvis. The main cause of this disease may be the endometrium is unable to get out of the body and gets trapped. It may be when the blood cannot come out of the body and returns back with endometrium.

How to treat Endometriosis?

The doctors will examine the condition and then will prescribe either the medication or surgery for the treatment.

The doctor will recommend medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and ibuprofen to relieve pain.

In extreme cases, the doctors will prescribe surgery. The doctors perform laparoscopy surgery in which they insert a tube with a small incision near the navel. After that, they put a small incision again to remove the part of the endometrium causing problem.

2. Hysterectomy- Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the female uterus or womb. This has to be performed in case of uterine cancer or cysts which cannot be removed by other surgeries. Sometimes, with the uterus other female reproductive parts such as fallopian tubes and cervix are also removed.

After a hysterectomy, the female will neither get pregnant nor will she get her monthly menstruations. However, you may have little blood discharge after the surgery which is no longer related to menstrual blood.

Benefits of ob-gyn procedures

An ob-gyn can also screen for cancer, treat infections, and perform surgery for pelvic organ or urinary tract problems.

Risks and complications of ob-gyn procedures

Every surgery has risks. Risks and complications of gynecological surgery depend on the type of procedure. These include:

  • Major bleeding
  • Uterine perforation or damage to the wall of the uterus, which can cause bleeding at the time of surgery or after surgery
  • Damage to a nearby part of the body like the bowel because the parts of a woman’s reproductive system are very close to other organs.

Conclusion

Obstetrics and Gynecology are two interconnecting branches of medical science. An obstetrician is highly dedicated to the health and delivery of pregnant mothers. Whereas, a gynecologist deals with all-female reproductive problems. There are many doctors who can perform both. They will diagnose the problem and then accordingly will provide treatment. A pregnant woman must contact her gynecologist to get regular checkups.

What is the difference between obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics and Gynecology are interrelated professions. The obstetrician deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and post-natal care whereas a gynecologist deals with all-female reproductive issues.

Can gynecologists deliver babies?

Gynecologists do not focus on the delivery of babies, they aim in treating a woman with other reproductive disorders. However, in some cases a gynecologist may be trained enough to deliver babies too.

What are gynecological disorders?

Disorders that affect the reproductive organs of the female are gynecological disorders. This may include disorders of the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, and vaginal.
