After this, your doctor will insert a speculum (an instrument) into the vagina. This instrument will hold the walls of the vagina apart. After inserting the speculum into your vagina, your doctor will be able to see the cervix easily. Then, they will take some samples of the cervical cells using a spatula (scraping device which is flat) and a soft brush.

The cervical cells will be placed in a container which contains a special liquid that helps preserve them. The samples will be examined under a microscope to detect whether it is precancerous or cancerous.

If the test comes out negative, it means that the cervical cells were not cancerous in nature and you will not need any treatment.

If your results come out positive, it means that cancerous or abnormal cells were detected in the sample, The different types of cells that can be detected during the procedure are:

  • ASCUS(Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance): Squamous cells grow on the surface of your cervix. However, these cells do not clearly reveal that there are precancerous cells present in it.
  • Squamous intraepithelial lesion: This term is used if the collected cells turn out to be precancerous.
  • Atypical glandular cells: Atypical glandular cells may appear in the opening of your uterus or cervix and may be cancerous.
  • Squamous cell cancer ( Adenocarcinoma cells): Presence of squamous cells reveals that there is a high chance of cervical cancer.
