Procedures that diagnose breast cancer are:

  • Breast examination:The doctor may check the breasts and the armpits to diagnose breast cancer or any other abnormalities in the breast.
  • Mammogram.A mammogram is a form of X-ray for the breast.
  • Ultrasound.Ultrasound is a common type of test that uses sound waves for producing images of the breast structure inside the body. This may be used to identify if a lump in the breast is solid or liquid in the state.
  • Biopsy: This procedure includes removing some of the cells as a sample from the breast for testing. Then the sample is sent to the laboratory. The type or stage of the cancer is determined by biopsy.
  • MRI (magnetic resource imaging): MRI is a machine that uses a magnet or radio waves that create pictures of the inside of the breast. It doesn’t use radiation for creating pictures.

 

Treatment and remedies for Breast Cancer

The treatment for breast cancer is based upon the type, stage and size of breast cancer. In most cases, women undergo surgery for treating breast cancer. But there are many options available for the treatment of breast cancer such as:

Lumpectomy: Lumpectomy is a surgical method of breast cancer removal. In this surgery, the surgeon removes the tumour and some of the surrounding unhealthy tissues. Lumpectomy is used to remove small tumours. For large tumours, chemotherapy is given first to shrink the size of the tumour.

Mastectomy: Mastectomy is used for the treatment of large tumours. It is a surgical method in which all the breast tissues are removed along with the nipple and lobules. It is a common operation for treating breast cancer.

Sentinel node biopsy: In this surgical method, a limited number of lymph nodes are removed. If cancer is not found in the lymph nodes then there is less chance of existence of cancer in other lymph nodes.

Axillary lymph node dissection: If the cancer is found in some lymph nodes then the doctor may ask to remove some lymph nodes that are additional in the armpit.

Breast removal: In several cases, women may ask for the removal of both breasts. It is mostly done in the case of women who have an increased risk of cancer development.
