Best Cervical Biopsy Treatment & Diagnostics in C Scheme, Jaipur

A cervical biopsy is a procedure where the doctor removes a sample tissue from the cervix to check for any abnormalities, such as cervical cancer. The cervix is a lower part of the uterus, which has a narrow opening through the vagina. There are several ways to conduct a cervical biopsy. Either the biopsy can procure a sample for testing or can remove the abnormal tissue too. These biopsies are also used to treat cells that have the potential to be cancerous.

What are the Types of Cervical Biopsies?

There are three types of cervical biopsies. They are;

  • Punch biopsy: Using an instrument known as the biopsy forceps, a small piece of the tissue from the cervix is removed. In order to make it easier to identify the cervix, a dye may be used to stain the cervix temporarily to check for any abnormalities.
  • Cone biopsy: Using a scalpel or laser, your doctor removes a large cone-shaped tissue from the cervix. During this procedure, general anaesthesia will be administered.
  • Endocervical Curettage: In this procedure, the cells from the endocervical canal will be removed. This area is located between the uterus and vagina and performed using an instrument known as a curette.

The type of biopsy will depend on your condition.

How to Prepare for a Cervical Biopsy?

  • A cervical biopsy is usually scheduled a week after your periods as it ensures a clean sample
  • It is important to discuss any medications that you are currently taking with your doctor as some medicines may hamper the procedure
  • At least 24 hours before your surgery, you must avoid tampons or vaginal cream and refrain from intercourse
  • For the procedure that requires general anaesthesia, you must avoid eating anything eight hours before the surgery
  • You need someone to drive you to and from the hospital as the anaesthesia can make you feel drowsy

What to Expect During the Procedure?

During the procedure, your doctor will first start with a normal physical examination of the pelvic. Then the anaesthesia will be administered. While the local anaesthesia will numb the area below the waist, general anaesthesia will put you to sleep.

Then, a speculum, which is a medical instrument, will be inserted inside your vagina to ensure the canal remains open during the procedure. Using a solution of medically approved vinegar and water, the cervix is cleaned. Although you may feel a slight burn, it won’t be very painful. Further, your cervix might also be swabbed with an iodine solution as it helps identify any abnormal tissue. Once the abnormal tissues are identified, they are removed by the doctor.

Post-biopsy, your cervix might be packed with absorbents to reduce any bleeding. However, this step can be skipped if your doctor feels that it’s not required.

What is the Recovery Process?

If you undergo a punch biopsy, it means you can go home the same day as it is an outpatient procedure. However, if you undergo any other biopsy, you will be required to stay in the hospital overnight.

After the biopsy, you may experience slight cramping or even spotting, which is normal. This can continue for a week. You will also be prevented from some of the activities such as heavy-lifting, intercourse, and more.
