Scar Revision

Scar revision is a plastic surgery that is carried out to improve or reduce the appearance of the scars by blending them in with the skin tone.

Scars are found anywhere in the body. They can occur due to any of the following reasons:

  • Injury
  • Poor healing
  • Wound due to accidents
  • Previous surgery

Scar revision is done to restore the functions and alter the change in the skin such as disfigurement.

How is Scar Revision Surgery Performed?

The techniques of the scar revision are chosen based on the type of scars. The types of scars and their procedure are as following:

These scars go away and improve on their own. There is minimal to no requirement for the treatment. Minimal treatment may include steroidal injection, medications, and freezing. However, if the scars keep recurring or there is an abnormal or no reaction to the steroids, then surgical treatment is preferred. During the procedure, the surgeon at Apollo Spectra, Jaipur will administer general anesthesia. Then, they will remove the excess scar tissues or reposition the incision giving it time to heal and appear less visible.

Initially, these scars are treated with steroid injections to reduce the size. If the scars do not respond to the steroidal injections, the doctor might recommend a surgery to remove them.

  1. Hypertrophic Scars: These scars are thick raised scars that are caused due to burns, incisions, or injury. They might be dark or light in colour and occur due to the abnormal response to the healing of the wound.
  2. Keloid Scars: The body produces a fibrous protein called collagen after the wound has healed. The excessive release of collagen results in keloid scars. The scars grow beyond the wound or around the wound. As the day passes, they get darker.
  3. Contracture Scars: These scars are formed when there is a large area of a wound caused due to a severe accident or injury. These scars do not allow the movement of the muscles or part of the body which has been injured.
These scars are treated using the following techniques:
    • Z-plasty: This technique is done to improve the appearance and the function of the contracture scars. This allows the redirection of the skin into a direction that suits the alignment of the skin line and creases of the skin. During the procedure, the old scar is surgically removed. Incisions are made on both sides in such a way that triangular flaps of skin are created. These flaps of skin are rearranged and stitched in a ‘Z’ pattern. These stitches are removed after a few days.
    • Skin Grafting: Skin grafting is a compound surgery that is used to treat severe scars. During the procedure, the healthy part of the skin is removed and covered over the scarred tissue. These grafts are taken from an area such as the thighs which have fatty tissues. This technique is done to improve the function of the scarred tissue.
    • Flap Surgery: Flap surgery is yet another compound and complicated surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the healthy skin, along with the tissues, blood vessels, and muscles to cover the injured scar.
