Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the joints and muscles that causes pain and disability. It is more common in women and occurs more frequently as the people get older. Some of the common symptoms of arthritis include swelling, stiffness and decreased mobility.

Although there are no dietary supplements to cure arthritis, still most of the people have a question in their mind about arthritis diet or to be more specific what can I eat to help my arthritis joint. Some people do think that change in diet can manage the arthritis pain.

Certainly, a well-balanced diet not only has potential benefits of arthritis symptoms but also protect against heart disease which can arise due to the complication of arthritis.

Good Diet for Arthritis

A smart arthritis diet can include anti-inflammatory foods. Following are some of the foods that can be consumed in a diet.

Fruits and vegetables

Having herbs and spices like garlic, ginger and onions are an excellent choice to be included in the diet. In fact simply chewing the ginger in a day certainly, helps to improve arthritis. Also, an addition of chillies along with cloves and cinnamon in the diet is also a better option to spice up the diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Intake of Omega- 3 fatty acids in the diet decreases the inflammation of joints. Sources of omega fatty acids include walnuts, raisins, cashew nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and flax seeds, and pistachios are great choices. These fatty acids help to keep the joints in a healthy condition as they help in lubrication.

Having sulphur rich diet

Sulphur rich foods must be included in the diet. Sulphur contains an organosulfur compound called methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). This compound helps in reducing the inflammation of joints and increases rebuilding of the tissues.

Having different forms of rotis

Incorporation of different forms of rotis made from cereals and millets like jowar, bajra and nachani are useful as these promote easiness in arthritis.


Turmeric is a very powerful anti-inflammatory medicinal herb. A regular use of turmeric provides extraordinary benefits to arthritis patients. Research studies show that intake of turmeric considerably reduces the inflammatory markers that are responsible for inflammation. Simply sprinkling turmeric on the food is the best way to have it in the diet.

Olive oil

Apart from healthy monounsaturated fats, the addition of olive oil in the diet can help in preventing arthritis-related inflammation. Olive oil contains some anti-inflammatory compounds that are used to fight against arthritis pain.

Foods to be avoided in arthritis

Sour foods

Sour foods like tomatoes, lemon, amla, etc and dairy products must be avoided in the diet as these foodstuffs can deteriorate the joint pains.

Excess sugar

Sugary snacks and drinks must be avoided as they promote the production of chemicals that can cause inflammation of joints. Further, these sugar-rich foods also put stress on the joints.

Hydrogenated oils

Oils like soybean oil, cottonseed oil are inflammatory. So the use of these oils must be avoided.

Conventional grains

Conventional grains like different refined flour products, gluten must be avoided as they can cause inflammation and can give rise to complications of arthritis.
