How to cure Haemorrhoids?

Piles or haemorrhoids are nothing but swollen and inflamed veins and blood vessels occurring in the rectum (internal piles) and anus (external piles). Though piles may not be dangerous or fatal, they often cause pain and discomfort whenever you pass stool or sit for too long.

Here’s how you can cure haemorrhoids:

Piles can be totally cured only if they are removed. If you suffer from first degree piles (flesh or mass protrudes out from the anus only slightly while defecating but retracts as soon as your bowel movement is over), then oral medication and home remedies can reduce the symptoms to a large extent. If you suffer from 2nd, 3rd or 4th degree of piles, then the only solution is to get them removed.

  • Non-surgical ways to cure haemorrhoids:

    • Sclerotherapy: This is one of the oldest methods to ease haemorrhoid pain. The start points of the haemorrhoids are individually injected with a safe chemical (phenol, etc.) in order to create thrombosis (blood clots) in the affected veins. Once the thrombosis is set, the swollen veins eventually suffocate due to lack of fresh oxygen, shrink, dry out and fall off. This happens in about 4 to 6 weeks. This treatment is more suited for internal piles.
    • Ligation: This process is especially recommended for external piles. With the help of a tool, rubber bands are tightly put around the origin points of each haemorrhoid. The idea is to squeeze the inflamed veins so tight that it cuts the blood supply to its protruded part. In a few days, the expanded veins die, dry and fall out. Pain can sometimes be experienced post-procedure. There are also chances of ulcers developing at the place of the affected vein if proper precautions are not taken.
    • Coagulation:

      Heat is used to seal the origin point of the haemorrhoid so that the blood in the expanded portion of the veins coagulates (thickens) and eventually dries out and falls off. Heat can be produced by using a laser beam or by electrotherapy.

  • Surgical ways to cure haemorrhoids:

Haemorrhoids Surgery is done in extreme cases when all the other methods have failed. It’s especially recommended for fourth-degree piles (when anal mass perpetually protrudes out of the body causing trouble).  

    • Plain surgery or haemorrhoidectomy: The haemorrhoids are completely removed by conducting an operation and the wounds or origin points of the affected veins are sutured. Post-op precautions and care are very crucial to avoid recurrence and further complications.
    • Stapled surgery: In this procedure, the haemorrhoids are not removed. Instead, the protruding or prolapsed veins are stapled to the rectum or anal wall. This instantly reduces the space occupied by them and also, the tightness eventually reduces the flow of fresh oxygen-filled blood into them. This method has a comparatively shorter recovery period.

  • Oral medication and home remedies:

These are not only required to reduce the symptoms of 1st-degree piles but also to prevent them from re-emerging once they are cured.  

    • Fibre-rich diet: Consume more vegetables, fruits and whole grains to prevent constipation (major cause of piles).
    • Laxatives: Consume stool softeners and prompters like psyllium husk, Triphala powder, etc. daily.
    • Use doctor prescribed creams and wipes to soothe the pain and itching.
    • Avoid sitting at one place for more than an hour.
    • Use ice packs to reduce swelling.
    • Give your bottom a warm sitz bath for 15 minutes after every time you have defecated.
    • Don’t force bowel movement by applying pressure.
    • Use wipes (non-alcohol based and non-perfumed ones) instead of rough toilet papers.
