Endoscopy Procedure in C Scheme, Jaipur

Endoscopy is a field of medical science that examines the human body from the inside. It diagnoses, evaluates, and treats conditions of the esophagus, stomach, and parts of the intestine.

What is Endoscopy?

The examination of the human body from the inside using an endoscope (a thin and flexible tube with a tiny camera) is called endoscopy. The endoscopic procedure involves the insertion of an endoscope into the body through a natural opening. It helps diagnose, evaluate, and treat several conditions. Unlike other medical techniques, endoscopy involves direct insertion of the endoscope into the organs.

What are the types of Endoscopic Services?

Endoscopic procedures involve:

  1. PERCUTANEOUS ENDOSCOPIC GASTROTOMY(PEG)- When oral intake is not possible for patients, PEG is used as a means of providing food and nutrients using a tube. Often, PEG is an alternative to open surgical gastrostomy insertion.
  2. ENDOSCOPIC RETROGRADE CHOLANGIOPANCREATOGRAPHY(ERCP)- It is a diagnostic procedure that examines pancreatic, gallbladder, and biliary ducts. It helps identify and remove stones or tumors in the ducts.
  3. ESOPHAGUS GASTRO DUODENOSCOPY(EGD)- It is a diagnostic procedure that provides a view from the mouth to the beginning of the small bowel. Generally, this procedure helps patients who have difficulty swallowing food or have ulcers, heartburn, upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, or persistent stomach pain.
  4. VIDEO CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY- This is a diagnostic procedure in which the patient swallows a PillCam (a tiny camera in a capsule). The PillCam passes naturally through the digestive system while transmitting video images to the computer via a data recorder. Capsule endoscopy helps the doctors examine the small intestine more clearly than the traditional procedures, such as the endoscopy, or colonoscopy cannot reach this part of the bowel. Capsule endoscopy helps identify the reasons for bleeding, detecting polyps, bowel diseases, ulcers, tumors of the small intestine.
  5. SMALL BOWEL ENTEROSCOPY- This is a diagnostic procedure that helps examines the small intestine with an endoscope.
  6. ANORECTAL TESTS- This is a diagnostic procedure that helps determine the strength of the rectum and anus muscles. It also helps evaluate the anorectal deformities and Hirschsprung's disease.
  7. BRONCHOSCOPY- This is a diagnostic procedure that provides the view of the bronchi or the passageways of the lungs. This procedure helps investigate abnormal chest X-rays or collect lung secretions to help diagnose and evaluate respiratory issues.
  8. COLONOSCOPY-This is a diagnostic procedure that provides a view of the large intestine (also called the colon) using a colonoscope. A colonoscope is a thin and flexible tube that sits with a tiny camera. This procedure provides a clear view of the large bowel. It helps diagnose haemorrhoids, rectal bleeding, and determining the severity of inflammatory bowel disease. The colonoscopy helps diagnose colon cancer also.

What are the benefits of an Endoscopy?

An endoscopy is the best way to detect and diagnose Barrett's oesophagus and early oesophagal cancer. Patients with Barrett's Esophagus are at a greater risk of developing cancer and narrowing of the oesophagus. Treatment through an endoscopy can save the oesophagus from major surgeries. And, in most patients, this type of cancer is detected at a very advanced stage. Therefore, it is essential to go for an endoscopy immediately if you show symptoms.

Who is the right candidate for an Endoscopy?

There are no specific guidelines for a particular age group to go for endoscopy to find out whether a patient has Barrett's oesophagus or not. Although, experts recommend age between 40 and 50 years.

Patients who experience persistent heartburn and get no relief after medication should consider having an endoscopy as well.

What to do before an Endoscopy?

Before an endoscopy, you should brief yourself about the procedure thoroughly with the doctor. Clear all your doubts and queries about the method. If you are a patient with diabetes or blood pressure, you may need to stop taking medication for some time. You will need to avoid eating for 6-8 hours before your procedure.

Will I be given any anaesthesia for an endoscopy?

You will not be under anaesthesia. But might get a numbing solution or a spray to your throat.

Will I be able to brush my teeth before the procedure?

As long you don't swallow anything, you're good to brush your teeth. The medical professionals will work in the vicinity of your mouth. Therefore, you should brush your teeth. Just make sure you don't swallow the spit.
