Why is vaccination important?

April 30, 2021

In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Since then, the virus has claimed over 3.12 million lives all over the world. The pandemic has affected everyone and everything, changing the way we interact with our loved ones and changing the way we work. It has also stalled global economies and stretched healthcare systems to the limit. Harsh restrictions have been imposed by the governments to curb the spread. But, thanks to the COVID-19 vaccination, we have a way of transitioning out of this phase. However, there are many people who are wary of the vaccine. That is why, in this article, we will be discussing the importance of COVID-19 vaccination:

  1. It reduces the risk of infection

As soon as you receive the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, your body will start to produce antibodies to the virus. With the help of these antibodies, your immune system will be able to fight the virus upon exposure, thereby reducing your chances of getting infected. It is important to note that even after getting vaccinated, you can still catch the virus. But, once the majority of the population is vaccinated, the chances of getting infected will be further reduced because of herd immunity. So, by getting vaccinated, you are not only reducing your chance of getting infected but also contributing towards community protection and reducing the possibility of virus transmission.

  1. It protects you from severe illness

Studies have shown that the COVID-19 vaccine is effective at preventing illnesses from COVID-19. This means that if you are vaccinated and you get infected by the virus, your chances of becoming severely ill will be reduced. The clinical trials for the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine showed that they were 100% effective in preventing severe illness. Vaccinated people who get infected only have a mild to moderate case compared to people who aren’t vaccinated. Once you are completely vaccinated, your risk of death or even hospitalization from coronavirus is almost eliminated.

  1. It will help you ditch the mask eventually

The COVID-19 vaccination is our only way to get back to our normal way of life. Preventative health measures such as hand washing, physical distancing, and mask-wearing have slowed down the spread of the virus. Until enough people are vaccinated, you have to continue with these precautions. Once we reach herd immunity and the spread becomes unlikely, physical distancing and wearing masks won’t be required anymore.

  1. It will help you reconnect with your loved ones

Once you get vaccinated and have waited the required time needed by your body to build immunity, you will be able to visit other vaccinated people. Also, if you have to be around someone with an infection and are not experiencing any symptoms, you won’t have to quarantine yourself.

After about a year of living with uncertainty, we finally have the vaccine with enough benefits that must make everyone consider getting the shot. With the COVID-19 vaccine, you can protect not only just yourself but also your family and your community.
