Types of Carpal Tunnel Release

There are usually two types of carpal tunnel release surgery:

  • Open surgery-It includes 2 inches long incision in the wrist to perform the surgery.
  • Endoscopic surgery-It involves a small incision to put an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube) inside your wrist. The camera attached to the endoscope guides your doctor. The surgeon inserts small tools inside the wrist from another incision.

How to prepare for Carpal Tunnel Release?

Before the procedure, you must avoid smoking and not consume blood-thinning drugs. You must not eat or drink anything before 6 to 12 hours of the surgery. The doctor will take a blood test and electrocardiogram before the surgery.

How is Carpal Tunnel Release performed?

Sedation before the surgery by general anesthesia or local anesthesia numbs the pain. The orthopedic surgeon will incise the ligament around the carpal tunnel to decrease the pressure around the median nerve. Due to tissue removal around the median nerve, it no longer passes through the filament. The incision is closed by stitches or sutures. Your wrist is placed in a splint or heavy bandage to keep it intact.

After Carpal Tunnel Release

Recovery after the surgery takes nearly several weeks to several months of the surgery. You have to wear a splint or a heavy bandage on your wrist for a week. Physiotherapy will strengthen and heal your wrist and hand.

Benefits of Carpal Tunnel Release

After carpal tunnel release surgery, you can regain the motion of your wrist, fingertips, and hands. This surgery reduces pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands. It is helpful even if you have a smaller carpal tunnel from birth.

Risks or Complications of Carpal Tunnel Release

Although carpal tunnel release is a safe surgical procedure, anesthesia can lead to several complications. It leads to various other risks like:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Injury to blood vessels or median nerves
  • A sensitive scar that hurts too much
