Menopause Care

Menopause refers to the natural process when your menstrual cycle ends. The diagnosis is made after 12 months without a menstrual cycle. Menopause can occur between 40 and 50 years of age.

If you have been diagnosed with menopause recently, you just need to search for a gynecology hospital near me or gynecology surgeon near me or gynecology doctors near me. A gynecologist will help you understand the changes in your body and make sure that everything is normal. It is a good idea to consult a gynecologist when you hit menopause. You can also ask your family doctor to refer you.

What symptoms should I expect?

Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Sweating at night, while sleeping
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Hair loss
  • Drying of skin more than usual
  • Irregular period dates
  • Chills
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Mood swings
  • Hot flashes
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Sagging or loose breasts

What are the causes of menopause?

There are various reasons for menopause, most of them are natural.

  • Hormonal changes with age: As you approach 30, your ovaries begin to produce less estrogen and progesterone as well as hormones that regulate menstruation, and your fertility will also decline. At 40, your menstrual cycle may be longer or shorter, heavier or lighter, more or less. After the average age of 51, your ovaries will no longer produce eggs, and you are likely to no longer have menstruation.
  • Surgically removed ovaries: The ovaries produce hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, including estrogen and progesterone. This surgery can cause immediate menopause. Your menstruation stops and you may experience hot flashes and other signs and symptoms of menopause.
  • This is very serious, because the hormonal changes are sudden rather than gradual changes within a few years. Surgery to remove the uterus instead of the ovaries (hysterectomy) usually does not result in immediate menopause.
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency: About 1% of women go through premature menopause. Primary ovarian failure is the inability of the ovaries to produce normal levels of reproductive hormones. This may lead to premature menopause. This occurs mostly due to genetic factors or autoimmune diseases. Hormonal therapy is usually recommended for these women, at least till the age of 40. This is to protect the brain, heart and bones.
  • Chemo and radiation therapy: Cancer treatments can trigger menopause and cause symptoms such as hot flashes during or shortly after treatment. The loss of menstruation and fertility after chemotherapy is not always permanent, so contraceptive measures may be required. Ovarian functions are affected only when radiation is directed at the ovaries. Radiation therapy to other parts of the body, such as breast tissue or head and neck tissue, has no effect on menopause.

How do I know that my menopause is really close?

Signs and symptoms may vary with each individual. Before the end of your period, you are likely to have irregular menstruation.

What period changes should I expect before hitting menopause?

Skipping periods of perimenopause are common and expected. Many times, menstruation stops after a month, resumes or skips a few months, and then the menstrual cycle begins again for a few months.

Can I still become pregnant in the perimenopausal period?

Although menstruation is irregular, it is still possible to get pregnant. If you missed your period but are not sure if you are going through menopause, consider a pregnancy test.
