Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch

Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch is a surgical obesity treatment, as it helps in weight reduction. These kinds of weight loss surgeries are commonly known as bariatric surgeries. This process is done on significantly overweight or obese people and has a body mass above 30. This is an alternative if exercise and diet have not been effective on that person. This procedure results in significant weight loss and also limits the food that you can eat.

There are two types of bariatric surgeries: sleeve gastrectomy limiting the food intake or surgeries like gastric bypass, which speeds up the digestion process. Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch is a weight loss procedure that does both. A part of the stomach is removed in the course, reducing the food intake and making you feel fuller with lesser food. At the same time, it also speeds up the digestion process, which gives your body less time to absorb calories or fats.  For further information, contact bariatric surgery in hospitals near you.

What Happens in a Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch?

Before the surgery, you will be given general anesthesia. You will be asleep during the procedure. This procedure is carried out as an outpatient procedure. The process is minimally invasive. The common procedure is conducted with the help of a laparoscope. A laparoscopy is an instrument that has a camera in the end. The surgery consists of two parts, a restrictive and a malabsorptive part. In the restrictive part of the surgery, just like in sleeve gastrectomy, 70% of the stomach is removed from the body.

During the procedure, several small incisions are made in the upper abdomen. Once the incisions are done, the surgical instruments, including the laparoscope, are inserted into these incisions to help perform the surgery.  When the devices are inside the body, the surgeon creates a narrow sleeve and removes the more significant part of the stomach. When the stomach has been removed, the rest of the stomach is reattached to form a tube-like shape. A large part of the duodenum is also removed along with the stomach during this procedure.

In the malabsorptive part of the procedure, the small intestine is rerouted. The path is split into two parts. The shorter part carries the food along the digestive tract, and the longer part carries the bile from the liver. Both of these parts then connect into one common pathway. The typical path is a short path where the digested food gets combined with the bile and then moves into the large intestine. The purpose of this procedure is to reduce the number of calories absorbed by the body. After this procedure, it is observed that the body only absorbs about 20% of the fat that they consume. After the surgery is completed, you will be kept under observation for a few hours, and then you will be allowed to go home.
