Gastric Banding

Gastric banding is a surgical obesity treatment, as it helps in weight reduction. These kinds of weight loss surgeries are commonly known as bariatric surgeries. This process is done on significantly overweight or obese people and has a body mass above 30. This is an alternative if exercise and diet have not been effective on that person. This procedure results in significant weight loss and also limits the food that you can eat.

In this surgery, the surgeon places a band around the upper stomach. This band creates a small pouch above the stomach that holds food. This band limits the amount of food you can consume by making you feel fuller with less food. After the surgery, the doctor can adjust the band to make the food pass quicker or slower to the stomach. What Happens in Gastric Banding?

Before the surgery, you will be given general anesthesia. You will be asleep during the procedure. This procedure is carried out as an outpatient procedure. The process is minimally invasive. The standard procedure is conducted with the help of a laparoscope. A laparoscopy is an instrument that has a camera in the end. The process begins with the surgeon making one to five small incisions around the upper abdomen since it’s a minimally invasive surgery.  Once the incisions are done, the surgical instruments, including the laparoscope, are inserted into these incisions to help perform the surgery.  The laparoscope will help the surgeon see inside the belly. Then the surgeon will use the instruments to place a silicone band around the upper part of the stomach. This band will reduce the size of the stomach, therefore reducing the food intake. The surgeon will then attach a tube to this band that can be accessed through a port in the skin of the abdomen. The surgeon will insert the saline solution into the pipe through this port, inflating the tube. Adjustments will be made to the band, and in the end, it will result in the creation of a small pouch above the actual stomach. This pouch will then reduce the size of the stomach, making the person feel fuller with less food, hence, reducing the food intake. After the surgery is completed, you will be kept under observation for a few hours, and then you will be allowed to go home.
