Glaucoma is an eye condition that can cause blindness. It can damage the optic nerve and the optic nerve is essential to have a good vision.

It is one of the main reasons for blindness. Older people are more susceptible to this eye condition. It is not easy to detect this because it is a gradual process and is often noticed at an advanced stage.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages our optic nerve. It can lead to loss of eyesight permanently. It is caused due to buildup of pressure inside the eye.

The optic nerve sends images to the brain. Intraocular pressure or the increased pressure in the eye can damage the optic nerve. If the damage is severe or serious, it can lead to permanent vision loss within a short span of time.

What Are the Types of Glaucoma?

There are mainly two kinds of Glaucoma:

Open-angle glaucoma

This type of Glaucoma is also called wide-angle glaucoma. It is the most common type of glaucoma. In this case, the fluid from your eye does not flow out as it should. But the drain structure in your eye or the trabecular meshwork looks well.

Angle-closure glaucoma

This type of glaucoma is also called narrow-angle or chronic angle-closure glaucoma. This is common in Asian countries. In this condition, your eye does not drain as it should. The drain space between your iris and cornea decreases. It can result in cataracts and farsightedness.

The other less common types of glaucoma include:

Secondary Glaucoma

Sometimes diabetes and cataracts can add pressure to your eye. This is called secondary glaucoma.

Normal-tension Glaucoma

It is a form of open-angle glaucoma. The optic nerve is damaged in your eye even though the pressure in your eye is not very high.

Pigmentary glaucoma

In this condition, the coloured part of the ear or the tiny bits of pigments from your iris get into the fluid and clog the drainage canals in your eye.

What are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?

People with glaucoma do not show any symptoms. If symptoms appear, it is usually late. Some of the common symptoms of glaucoma include:

  • Eye pain
  • Hazy eyes
  • Vomiting or upset stomach
  • Redness in your eye
  • Seeing coloured rings around lights
  • Sudden vision disturbances

What Causes of Glaucoma?

Aqueous humour is a clear fluid that is made by the back of your eye. This fluid fills the front part of your eye and leaves your eye through some channels in your iris and cornea. If the channels are blocked, the natural pressure of your eye increases. As the pressure increases, the optic nerve of your eye may be damaged and you can lose your vision. Some factors that play an important role in glaucoma include:

  • Eye drops
  • Medications like corticosteroids
  • High blood pressure
  • Blocked drainage in your eye
  • Poor blood flow to your optic nerve

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience symptoms like sudden vision disturbances, nausea, or redness in your eye, you should visit the eye doctor immediately. If you leave it untreated, it can lead to total vision loss.
