Hernia surgery in Bangalore

When an internal tissue or an organ pushes out of the hole in the muscles, it is known as a hernia. Hernia surgery or hernioplasty is performed to correct a hernia by pushing back the displaced organs where they belong. Hernia surgery is a type of repair operation where a mesh path is attached to the weak part of the tissue. It is one of the most common surgeries performed today.

What are the most common hernia symptoms?
Usually, it takes almost 2 years for a hernia to show any signs or symptoms and it begins with irritation or pain in the affected area. Also, for some people, the symptoms become noticeable while they are performing any physical activity. The symptoms and factors of a hernia are:

  • You may experience hernia pain or discomfort
  • The pain and discomfort interferes with your daily activities
  • The pain and discomfort may worsen as time passes
  • The hernias may become big
  • The hernias may start to grow quickly
  • In some places, the hernias may become severe, such as the groin
  • You may experience sharp pain in your abdomen and vomiting
  • If a hernia puts a strain on the nerves, it can lead to irritation or numbness
What are the types of hernia repair?
Herniorrhaphy (tissue repair)
This is one of the oldest ways to repair a hernia. This traditional method is excellent and is still being used. During this hernia surgery, your surgeon will make a long incision where a hernia is present, and they will then cut the area to have an easy access to a hernia. Then, the tissue or the organ that are displaced are put back in their original position. Also, the hernia sac is then removed. The surgeon will then close the opening through which a hernia pushed out. After sterilizing the wound, it is then closed.
Hernioplasty (mesh repair)
During this surgery, the surgery doesn’t stitch the opening closed but will use a flat and a sterile mesh to close the opening. This mesh is usually made of flexible plastics, like polypropylene or tissues from the animals. The surgeon will then proceed to make tiny holes like mesh and patch it together. The weak tissues surrounding the hernia is then covered with the mesh. This treatment is also known as tension-free hernia repair.
What are the types of a hernia?
Your surgeon will decide the type of surgery or treatment depending on the type of a hernia. Commonly, there are three types of a hernia. They are:

  • A reducible hernia – It is the type of a hernia, which can be pushed back through the hole in the muscle.
  • Irreducible or incarcerated hernia – It is a type of a hernia when the organ or the tissues from the abdomen, have filled the sac of a hernia. Also, it cannot be pushed back through the hole.
  • Strangulated hernia – The organ or tissue if it becomes stuck inside a hernia, the blood supply may stop.

The hernia techniques mentioned above can be either performed by making a large incision or by using a laparoscope. The laparoscopic surgeries are performed using a flexible cable attached to a camera, which will enable the surgeon to view inside.

What is the recovery procedure?
After the surgery, you may have to stay in the hospital for a few days. Before being discharged, your doctor will let you know about all the activities you can or cannot do. For a person to recover from hernia surgery completely, it usually takes about 3-6 weeks. And, it might take about 2 weeks to go back to the normal activities.
What are the complications that can occur if you don’t have the surgery?
  • Hernias can become incarcerated when not treated on time, i.e., they can become trapped inside the walls of the abdomen. This will stop any blood supply from reaching the hernia and can block the passing of stools. This can cause a strangulated hernia, and this will require surgery immediately. It is not a compulsion that your hernia will lead to that situation, but it is still a risk. Therefore, getting a surgery when things are uncomplicated can ensure good health.
  • Hernias don’t remain the same and can grow as time passes.
  • You may have to undergo surgery after some time.
