Colon Cancer Treatment in Sadashiv Peth, Pune

The colon is the main part of the large intestine and forms the digestive system. Colon cancer is a disease in which the cancer cells form in the colon. Certain signs like blood in the stool, constipation, change in bowel activities, and extreme weight loss might be the result of colon cancer. After colon cancer is diagnosed, it is tested if the cells have spread to other parts of the body. Colon cancer spreads to other parts of the body through the lymph, tissues, and blood. Depending on this severity, there are five stages of colon cancer. Stage 0 is the earliest stage of colon cancer. Surgery is the treatment for the early stages of cancer.

There are many types of surgeries used to treat colon cancer. What type of surgery is ideal for you depends on your health and how extensive is cancer through your body.

Some surgeries are as follows:

  • Polypectomy or local excision: During a polypectomy, a colonoscopy is used to remove a polyp. A polyp is a small bulging area of tissue. During a local excision, some of the tissues of the colon are also removed to cut out cancer using a cutting tool through the rectum.
  • Colon resection: if the cancer is larger, colon resection is performed. There are two types of colon resection that the doctor can choose from. *resection of the colon with anastomosis: If the cancer is larger, partial colectomy is performed in which cancer along with healthy cells are removed. During a total colostomy, the entire colon is removed. The lymph nodes might also be removed. The surgeon can perform anastomosis in which he/she sews the two ends of the colon together. The lymph node can be removed to examine the possibilities of cancer in it. *resection with colostomy: If the doctor is unable to sew the two ends of the colon back together, then an opening is made on the outside of the body. A bag is placed around this opening which collects the waste that passes through this opening called a stoma.

Apart from surgery, there are other types of treatment options for colon cancer like:

  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Cryosurgery
  • Immunotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Cryosurgery
  • Targeted therapy

Risks associated with colon cancer surgery:
