How is the Procedure of Corneal Surgery Performed?

Before the procedure of cornea surgery is performed, you will be asked to undergo an in-depth eye exam that may help your doctor to study the complications more closely. The measurement of your eye will be taken which will help in finding the right size of the cornea for you. It is also recommended that you discuss your history of medication and supplements to avoid any complications at a later stage.

Different types of procedures can be chosen depending on the severity and affected area of the cornea. Either the entire cornea or a part of it is removed. This depends on the damaged area of the cornea.

While performing any of the procedures, local anesthesia will be used. And it generally takes about 30 minutes to an hour for the completion of the surgery.

  • Full Thickness Corneal Transplant Surgery
It is also known as penetrating keratoplasty. This type of surgery is chosen when the severity of the case is extremely high. This involves the replacement of all the layers of your cornea.
  • Partial Thickness Corneal Transplant Surgery
This type of surgery is also known as deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty. This type of surgery is used when the internal layers of the cornea are not affected. In this type of surgery, the outer and middle layers of the cornea are removed with the help of inducing air to lift the layers. There is very little scope for the inner eye getting infected during this procedure.
  • Endothelial Keratoplasty
