Circumcision Surgery in Sadashiv Peth, Pune

Boys are born with a hood of skin covering the head of the penis. This part also called the foreskin is removed surgically. This process is called circumcision. This is commonly done due to religious beliefs in newborn babies. But it can also be performed for older children and adults. You must talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of circumcision.

Risks of circumcision:

Circumcision rarely involves complications. It is a quick process and takes only a few minutes. Some complications in the foreskin can occur like it might be cut too short or too long. Sometimes, the foreskin might not heal properly after the procedure. There are chances that the remaining foreskin gets reattached to the end of the penis which might require minor surgical repair. Some other complications that can happen are as follows:

  • Infection or poor healing
  • Bleeding
  • Irritation at the tip of the penis.
  • Blockage of the urethra.

Health benefits of circumcision:

The health benefits of circumcision are as follows:

  • Decreased risk of urinary tract infections: circumcision decreases the risks of UTIs in men. UTIs can lead to kidney problems.
  • Easier to maintain hygiene: it is easier to wash and clean the penis for circumcised males.
  • Reduced risks of penile cancer: circumcision reduces the risks of penile cancer in men. The risks of cervical cancer in women who sexually engage with circumcised men are less.
  • Decreased risks of STIs: circumcised men have fewer chances of contracting sexually transmitted diseases like HIV.

The problems associated with not being circumcised are avoidable with proper practices.

What happens during circumcision?

The circumcision of a newborn is done within 10 days after birth. The arms and legs of your infant are restrained. His penis and surrounding areas are cleansed. An anesthetic is either injected or applied as a cream. A plastic ring or a clamp will be attached to the penis. The doctor will then remove the foreskin. The penis will then be covered with an ointment like petroleum jelly or a topical antibiotic. Then the doctor will loosely cover the area with gauze. This procedure takes about 10 minutes. The same procedure is followed for older boys and adults. The procedure involves general anesthesia and there might be more complications.

What can you expect after the procedure?

It tasks around 10 days for the foreskin to heal properly. The tip of the penis appears swollen and red initially after the procedure. Sometimes, you might notice a yellow-colored fluid on the tip of the penis. You can wash the penis as it heals. For your newborn baby, keep changing the bandage every time you change his diapers. Apply a little amount of petroleum jelly on the tip of the penis. Do not fasten the diaper tightly and change the diapers often. Once the foreskin of the penis heals, you can wash it with normal soap and water.

Complications after circumcision are rare. Contact the doctor in the following cases:

  • There is a persistent bleeding
  • Urination does not resume within 12 hours after the circumcision
  • The plastic ring placed during circumcision does not fall off on its own and stays for up to two weeks after circumcision
  • There is foul-smelling drainage from the penis

What is the age limit of circumcision?

Circumcision can be done at any age. If you were not circumcised as a baby, you can go for it as an adult. Your doctor may recommend it for certain issues like if you contract a repeated infection in the foreskin that is not being cured with other treatment. If you see any color difference in the foreskin or if there is a pain in this area, then you must see a doctor.

Should boys be circumcised?

Circumcision decreases the risks of penis cancer which is also very rare. The circumcised male has lesser risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Such people also have lesser chances of contracting urinary tract infections. But many people prefer to opt for circumcision due to religious and social beliefs. It is easier to keep the penis clean if circumcised.

What care should be taken after circumcision in males?

Your doctor will give you instructions and advice to relieve the pain after the procedure. You can return to your daily activities once you feel comfortable. The more you walk the faster you will recover. Ask your doctor about sexual activities. Usually, you will be suggested to avoid sexual activities for six weeks after the circumcision.
