What are the Symptoms of Male Infertility?

One of the main symptoms is not being able to conceive after trying for a year or more. Other symptoms include;

  • Problems with regular sexual functions, such as maintaining an erection
  • Sex drive is low
  • You notice pain or lump in the testicular area
  • You lose the inability to smell
  • Breast growth that’s abnormal (known as gynecomastia)
  • Facial hair or body hair becomes less due to hormonal imbalance
  • Low sperm count

How to Diagnose Male Infertility?

When you are unable to conceive and visit a doctor, they will conduct a few tests to determine the reason for infertility. To check for male infertility, your doctor might;

  • Do a general physical examination and ask you about your medical history
  • Semen analysis is conducted, where the semen is sent to a laboratory to check for any abnormalities.
  • Scrotal ultrasound - It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the insides of the scrotal
  • Transrectal ultrasound - A lubricated ultrasound wand is inserted inside the rectum to see the prostrate and check if any blockages are present
  • Hormone testing is conducted to look for any hormonal imbalance
  • Post ejaculation urine analysis is conducted to check for the presence of sperm in the urinate
  • Genetic tests
  • Testicular biopsy

What is the Treatment for Male Infertility?

Some of the treatment options for male infertility are;

  • Surgery - If the diagnosis show varicocele or vas deferens defect, it can be rectified with surgery
  • Antibiotics treatments are given to cure the condition
  • Medication and counseling can improve sexual intercourse problems
  • Hormonal treatment 
  • Assisted reproductive technology can be administered, which is an artificial treatment

In very rare cases, the treatments can fail as the male infertility treatment isn’t a guarantee of the defect is irreversible. However, don’t let it disheartened you as there are several procedures available to help you father a child.
