Why is Shoulder Replacement Done?

Shoulder replacement surgery is generally recommended to individuals who are suffering from joint pain and dysfunction. Various reasons can cause joint pain, including –

How is Shoulder Replacement Done in Pune?

In shoulder replacement surgery, the patient is first either given general anesthesia or regional anesthesia. Then, the surgeon makes an incision and starts the surgery. Depending on the type of shoulder replacement procedure, the damaged parts are removed and replaced with a prosthesis.

What are the Types of Shoulder Replacement?

There are various types of shoulder replacement procedures –

  • Partial shoulder replacement – Also known as stemmed hemiarthroplasty, the humeral head of the arm is removed and replaced with a prosthetic ball in this procedure. However, the glenoid bone is kept intact.
  • Total shoulder replacement – Also known as traditional shoulder replacement or arthroplasty, the ball and socket are removed and replaced with prosthetics in this procedure.
  • Reverse total shoulder replacement – In this procedure, the position of the ball and socket of the shoulder joint are reversed. In place of the ball, a socket-shaped prosthetic is fitted and in place of the natural socket, a prosthetic ball is fitted. This surgery is suitable for those individuals who cannot undergo traditional shoulder replacement surgery.
  • Shoulder resurfacing – In this procedure, a smooth rounded cap is fitted in the humeral head so that joint movement can be improved. The humeral head doesn’t need to be removed in this surgery.
