Gynaecological Cancer is an umbrella term for all types of cancers that occur in either the woman’s reproductive system or genitals. It includes the cervix, vagina, vulva, fallopian tubes, uterus, and ovaries. Although for some gynecological cancers there are screening procedures available, there are no proven screening techniques for others. Therefore, in such cases, it becomes imperative that a woman understands all the signs and symptoms and takes timely help from her doctors if necessary.

What are the Types of Gynecologic Cancers?

There are five main types of gynecological cancers. They are;

  • Uterine Cancer or Endometrial Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Cervical Cancer
  • Vulvar Cancer
  • Vaginal Cancer

What Causes Gynecologic Cancers?

It is still not sure as to what actually causes the condition. But some of the risk factors include;

  • If you are someone who started her periods on or before the age of 12 and menopause by 55
  • Never having children
  • Diabetes
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
  • Smoking
  • A weak immune system or HIV infection
  • Obesity
  • A history of breast cancer or gynecologic cancer
  • Old age
  • Heredity
  • Using birth control pills or other fertility medication
  • Consuming a high-fat diet
  • If you have undergone prior radiation to the pelvic region
  • Estrogen therapy

What are the Symptoms of Gynecologic Cancer?

Cervix Cancer

  • Bleeding in between your periods or noticing blood after having intercourse
  • Pain during sex
  • Heavy periods that are not normal
  • Unusual discharge from the vagina
  • Bleeding even after you have achieved menopause

In severe stages, along with the above-mentioned symptoms, cervix cancer can also cause fatigue, leg pain or swelling, and lower back pain.

Uterine Cancer

  • Watery or bloody discharge from the vagina that may carry the foul smell
  • Bleeding between periods or post menopause
  • Abdomen pain or discomfort
  • Difficulty while urinating or pain
  • Feeling pain during sex

Ovarian Cancer

  • Feeling bloated
  • Size of your abdomen increases
  • Pain in the abdomen or pelvis
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling too full after eating
  • Indigestion
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation or increase in bowel habits
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Fatigue

Fallopian Tube Cancer

  • Swelling or lump in the lower abdomen
  • Pain in the bottom of the abdomen or the pelvis
  • Feeling like pressure on the bladder or the bowel
  • Feeling incomplete bowel or bladder even after going to the toilet
  • Abnormal discharge from the vagina
  • Bleeding after menopause

Vulval Cancer

  • Feeling like itching, pain, or a burning sensation in the vulva
  • Noticing a wart or lump or a swelling
  • Thickened skin or raised patches on the vulva (it can be red, white, or brown)
  • A mole, lesion, or sore
  • Swollen or hard lymph nodes near the groin

Vaginal Cancer

  • Bleeding (not periods)
  • Pain in the pelvic region
  • Finding a lump in the vagina
  • Finding it difficult to urinate
  • Rectum pain

How is Gynecologic Cancer Diagnosed?

Visiting a doctor regularly and undergoing regular physical checkups can help prevent gynaecologic cancer. If you notice any symptoms or if your doctor suspects gynecological cancer, a pap test can be conducted. To further clarify, a colonoscopy, ultrasound, MRI scan, biopsy, or more may be conducted depending on your symptoms.

How is Gynaecological Cancer Treated?

According to the severity and type of gynecological cancer, your doctor might recommend;

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormone therapy
  • Intraperitoneal chemotherapy
  • Suggest clinical trials
