Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a condition where you lose control of your bladder. The severity of the condition varies, while you may experience a sudden urge to urine leakage when you laugh, sneeze or cough. Urinary incontinence can be an embarrassing problem, therefore it becomes necessary to seek immediate medical attention. Although this condition occurs as you age, other factors can also lead to urinary incontinence.

What are the Symptoms of Urinary Incontinence?

The main symptom of urinary incontinence is leakage of urine. While it can be a small amount, the leakage can also be moderate. There are five types of urinary incontinence and the symptoms can vary with each type. Take a look.

Stree Incontinence: Here, any sort of pressure on the bladder will lead to urine leakage or every emptying of the bladder. You can lose control of your bladder when you cough, sneeze or even laugh too much.

Urge Incontinence: Here, you suddenly feel a strong need to urinate and experience an involuntary urine loss. If you are suffering from this condition, you may also feel the need to urinate several times at night.

Overflow Incontinence: You experience frequent urine leakage even after going to the bladder because your bladder doesn’t completely empty.

Functional Incontinence: Due to functional or mental impairment, you are unable to make it to the bathroom on time.

Mixed Incontinence: This is when you experience more than one type of urinary incontinence.

When to See a Doctor?

Understandably, you may hesitate to talk to your doctor. However, you must never neglect any of the symptoms as they may deteriorate. It is also important to seek immediate attention if;

  • You are unable to socialize or go out or are required to limit your social activity
  • It starts to impact your life negatively
  • It can increase the risk of falls as you will tend to rush to the bathroom
  • It can be a symptom of some other serious condition

How to Diagnose Urinary Incontinence?

When you visit your doctor, he will enquire about your symptoms to understand more about the problem and to come up with the right diagnosis. A physical examination will be done to see if you have any other underlying medical condition due to which you are experiencing urinary incontinence as a symptom. For further analysis, your doctor may recommend a few tests, which includes;

Urinalysis: A urine examination is conducted to check for any abnormalities.

Bladder diary: You will be asked to write down your bladder journey, which will include your water consumption, the number of times you have to go to the bathroom, so on and so forth

Postvoid residual method:During this test, you will have to pee in a container. Once you are done, you will be asked to pee in another fresh container. The lab technician will analyze, which container holds more volume. If it is the second container, it can be because of a blockage that’s causing the incontinence.

How to Treat Urinary Incontinence?

Depending on the type of incontinence you are suffering from, your doctor will offer you treatment options, which includes; Behavioral therapy: Here, to treat urinary incontinence, a few exercises will be prescribed to take care of the condition.

Pelvic Floor Exercises: For instance, kegel exercises or something similar will be prescribed to get rid of urinary incontinence.

Medications: Tropical estrogen, alpha-blockers, etc. may be prescribed.

Electrical stimulation:It is a treatment where using electrodes, the electrical stimulation will be provided

Finally, medical devices may be administered or surgery may be recommended to treat the condition.

Urinary incontinence is a condition that’s treatable. Therefore, you should seek medical intervention to save yourself from embarrassing situations.
