Crossed Eyes Treatment

Crossed eyes or walleyes, refers to the condition wherein your eyes are not placed normally and are not lined in place. This can be understood as the situation wherein your eyes are not able to function efficiently as to look at an object together. One of the eyes may look in or out, or turn up or down. The tendency of the condition may vary for different people. While in a few cases, the condition may take place or get aggravated due to excess stress or tension, the others may experience the condition in the permanent form.

What do you Mean by Crossed Eyes?

Crossed eyes, also known as strabismus, are a state wherein a person is unable to align his/her eyes on the same point at the same time. The eyes are pointed in different directions or can be simply said to be misaligned. Usually, the condition is caused due to underlying weakness of the muscles in one or both eyes. When your brain receives a different visual message from each eye, it tends to ignore the signals coming from your weaker eye. If the condition is left untreated for a longer duration, you may lose vision in your weaker eye.

What are the Signs or Symptoms of Crossed Eyes?

The most common sign of crossed eyes can be seen when supervision of each eye is different, they may point inward or outward but never towards the same target. There are, however, more signs of crossed eyes that can be stated as:

  • The eyes are unable to move together
  • Impaired vision
  • Double vision
  • Squinting with only one eye
  • Headache
  • The strain on the eyes
  • Unsymmetrical points of reflection in each eye

How to Treat the Condition of Crossed Eyes?

The recommended treatment plan for crossed eyes depends on the severity and the underlying cause of your condition. It is suggestive that the treatment should be started as soon as possible, as a delay may lead to loss of vision in the affected eye or the condition may further aggravate the condition with age. Several treatments may be used alone or in combination, depending on the particular case of crossed eyes. The most widely discussed treatments for the condition of crossed eyes are:

Eyeglasses or contact lenses –This is recommended mainly in case of crossed eyes caused due to uncorrected farsightedness.

Patching – This method is used to strengthen the weaker eye by patching or covering the better-sighted eye.

Medication concerning eye drops – In certain cases, medication can be used as an alternative to patching, wherein eye drops are used in the stronger eye to temporarily blur the vision in the good eye. This forces the weaker eye to function more efficiently.

Eye exercises – Many vision therapy programs incorporate exercises for the eyes to help to improve their coordination. However, these exercises alone are not sufficient to treat crossed eyes and are combined with other treatments for a more effective result. A few exercises that are helpful in the case are Pencil Push-ups, also known as near point of convergence exercises, Brock String, and Barrel Cards.

Surgery – Surgery is said to work the best when undergone at a young age, although, adults may opt for it as well. During the procedure, the outer layer of the eyeball is extended to reach a muscle. The surgeon then removes a part from one sectional end and reattaches it at the same location to strengthen it, leading the eye to turn toward that particular side. On the other hand, to weaken a muscle, the doctor locates it back or makes a sectional cut across it, thereby leading the eye to turn away. This method of treatment has a high success rate although it can be expensive and may also involve more risk than other options.

1. What happens if crossed eyes are left unattended?

If the crossed eyes are left untreated, the condition can lead to another medical condition of the loss of vision in the affected eye, known as amblyopia, wherein, the eye that the brain ignores will never see well.

2. What is the right age for crossed eyes surgery?

The surgery can be performed in children who are as young as four months of age and is a significant option for older children and adults as well. It's better to get the surgery done at the earliest possible.
