How should you prepare for a cystoscopy?

The duration of the procedure is around 30-60 minutes. Before conducting it, your urologist will explain the process in detail and make you comfortable, and also allow you to ask queries. At this point, you need to inform him or her about  any previous instance of urinary tract Infection or other urethral problems. 

If you have allergies or are on medications including over-the-counter medicines, disclose this to avoid any complications. 

Fasting for eight hours is recommended. 

What happens during a cystoscopy?

Your doctor will ask for your urine sample for diagnosis. Sometimes, the doctor may also prescribe antibiotics for your immune system to fight infections. After that, you may be required to wear the gown provided by the hospital and lie down on a table in a lithotomy position or as prescribed by the doctor. 

Anesthesia will be administered and a sterile solution will be entered into the bladder through the cystoscope which will give a clear picture of the bladder. After the procedure, you may be advised to empty the bladder. 

The doctor will keep you under observation for some time after which you will be discharged. 

What does cystoscopy treat?

Cystoscopy helps in the early detection of any cancer or tumors in the urethra or treat inflammation in the bladder. Moreover, surgical tools are inserted during the process to remove stones in the bladder.

It also looks for changes such as narrowing of the urethra or enlargement of the prostate which can become cancerous. Besides, urine samples and samples of bladder tissues can be collected for biopsy.
