Depending upon the area of occurrence, a fistula can be of different types, such as

    • Colovaginal Fistula formed between the colon and the vagina.
  2. Urinary tract fistula
    • Vesicouterine fistula: formed between the bladder and the uterus.
    • Vesicovaginal fistula: develops between the bladder and the vagina.
    • Urethrovaginal fistula: occurs between the urethra and the vagina.
  3. Others
    • Enteroenteric fistula: occurs between two parts of the intestine.
    • Enterocutaneous fistula: occurs between the small intestine and the skin.
    • Colocutaneous fistula: occurs between the colon and the skin. 

What are the symptoms of a fistula?

Depending on the type of fistula, these are certain symptoms that include the following:

  • Constant urine leakage
  • Irritation and itching in the female external genitalia
  • Recurring urinary tract infections
  • Leakage of feces
  • Fluid drainage
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea and abdominal pain

What are the causes of fistula?

Fistulas can be caused by inflammatory ulcers and sores formed on the inner walls of the intestine, anal, and surrounding organs. These ulcers can extend to the whole thickness of the bowel wall creating a hole. An abscess can also cause a fistula to form.

Fistula can cause an abscess (a painful condition where the skin gets filled with pus and other infections).

It can also cause sepsis, a dangerous medical condition that can lead to low blood pressure, organ damage, or even death.

What are the treatment options for fistula?

Treatments are based on their location, size, and condition.


  • Antibiotics
  • Fibrin glue, a medicinal adhesive used to seal fistulas
  • Plug, a collagen matrix used to fill the fistula
  • Catheters, a tool inserted to drain the fistula


  • Transabdominal surgery: an incision is made on the abdominal wall to access the fistula
  • Laparoscopic surgery: This is a minimally invasive surgery. An endoscope is inserted through a small incision to detect and treat the problem

How is a fistula diagnosed?

Fistulas are diagnosed through physical examination of the affected area. Your doctor will look for some characteristic nodules, redness, swelling, and pain in the concerned region. Some additional tests are also done to check for STDs, inflammatory bowel diseases, rectal cancer, or diverticular disease. Examination through endoscopy and imaging tests like colonoscopy may also be performed.

Do fistulas smell?

Rectovaginal, colovaginal, or enterovaginal fistula can cause foul-smelling discharge or gas.
