What is a Cervical Biopsy?

A cervical biopsy, also known as colposcopy, is a medical procedure that involves taking a small part of your tissue from your cervix, which is the part of your body located between your uterus and vagina. A cervical biopsy is conducted when an abnormality has been found during your pelvic routine.

It is ideal to schedule your cervical biopsy 1 week after your periods. It will allow the doctor to get a clean sample. Your doctor will ask you to stop taking any medication and stay away from alcohol and cigarettes from a week before the surgery. Your doctor will also ask you to refrain from using pads, tampons, vaginal cream, or engage in sexual intercourse 24 hours before the surgery.

On the day of the surgery, you will be asked to lay down on a table with your legs in stirrups. Your doctor will administer local anesthesia before beginning the procedure. The doctor will insert an instrument called a speculum. It allows the vaginal canal to stay open while the doctor takes the sample. Your cervix will then be cleaned with a mixture of vinegar and water and the area will be swabbed with iodine. It is called the Schiller test which allows the doctor to detect any abnormality easily. Using forceps or a scalpel, the doctor will remove the abnormal growth from your cervix.

Once the surgery is completed, your cervix will be cleaned with an absorbent material to control the bleeding. After the surgery, you can go home after a little rest. Your doctor will recommend that you do not put anything inside your vagina for a week.
